Maybe it’s the annual arrival of spring cleaning or that dreaded need to purge old clothes, but every day I anxiously look into my cluttered closet and feel overwhelmed. Sometimes I want to give away all my clothes and start anew. As a regular contributor for Ecouterre, I’m constantly following the latest in eco-fashion and design, though it’s been hard to apply everything I see and learn in the industry to my own personal habits.I’ve been trying to shop ethically when it comes to fashion, donate unworn or old clothes, and revamp my wardrobe into one that reflects minimalism and quality pieces.

While skimming through some ethical and sustainable fashion sites, I happened upon this amazing Kickstarter campaign. VETTA is a capsule collection of versatile clothing designs, responsibly made in the U.S. from eco-friendly materials, sold at wholesale prices. But the coolest part? As a capsule collection, VETTA consists of only 5 pieces of clothing that you can wear 30 different ways! As a lover of multi-functional clothing, I literally squealed for joy when I saw this!

The VETTA capsule consists of 5 simple, versatilepieces that can be mixed and matched to create a month’s worth of outfits. The collection features a two-piece dress (really a crop top and skirt), a blouse, culottes, a vest dress, and a tunic. The color options for these pieces are also as simple and timeless as the designs: black, white, chambray, or mocha brown.

The price of these pieces ranges from $59 to $109, or $425 for the entire 5-piece capsule. While $425 sounds like a lot of money, that’s about $80 per piece for an ethically-made, high-quality clothing item that is timeless in style and can be worn in countless ways. A conscious closet can be initially pricey, but if you think about it, that’s contributing less to landfills, unethical working practices or unfair wages, and not giving into wasteful, fast fashion trends. In my opinion, this is a better way to spend your money on fashion.

VETTA is the brainchild of two best friends, Cara Bartlett and Vanessa van Zyl, who sought out to create high-quality, eco-friendly fashion pieces that would simplify their wardrobes while not contributing to the wasteful, unethical fashion industry. Cara is also the blogger behind ethical fashion blog, Bien Faire.

VETTA partners with a local, family-run manufacturing company in New York City and is committed to paying legal wages, ensuring workplace safety, prohibiting unlawful labor and discrimination, and creating fair jobs in the US and abroad. Bartlett and van Zyl work closely with the employees and visit the factory often.

VETTA is committed to using environmentally friendly fabrics in their designs that also look and feel great. This collection uses three types of fabrics:

Deadstock Poly Crepe: fabric that is leftover from other brands, easy to care for, and used in the Blouse.

Tencel: fabric made from natural wood fibers that are sustainably harvested, requires less water than other fabrics, uses a closed loop system that recycles solvents, is biodegradable, absorbent, soft, and feels like silk. Used in the Tunic and Two-Piece Dress.

Tencel Blend: made with all of the above amazing properties of Tencel, and a smaller percentage of cotton and stretch, to give it the right fit and drape. It’s made in environmentally responsible production facilitiesand has the perfect weight and softness. Used in the Culottes and Vest Dress.

If you’re into ethical clothing likeReformation or Everlane, I think VETTA’s designs come somewhere in between those brands. Effortless but trendy, simplistic but with a bit of feminine flair, VETTA’s pieces will never go out of style and can also be flattering on any woman. There is also the added benefit that these designs can be worn in so many different ways as separate pieces or interchangeably. Not to mention, VETTA also ranges in sizes from XS to XL so the range is generous in sizing. As an extra petite girl, I’m very grateful for that.

The current pieces in this capsule seem to make perfect outfits for spring and summer but if the instant popularity of VETTA’s Kickstarter is any indication (and this cryptic backers’ update), I have a feeling there will also be a fall or winter capsulecollection soon. Fingers crossed!

I love that VETTA is making sustainable fashion chic, effortless, and affordable. This capsule collection proves that ethical and sustainable fashion can be cool, fun, and wearable for the masses. The versatility of this collection encourages creativity and instills an impactful message about being more conscious of your shopping habits and the quality of the clothes you are buying. These clothes also illustrate an important lesson about the wasteful, unethical fashion industry and how we can change that.

VETTA is on Kickstarter to raise funds, so there’s only a limited time you can purchase this collection. For more information, check out VETTA’s website or Kickstarter page. Darling Magazine’s interview with VETTA’s founders is also a good read. The campaign closes on March 31st.

I don’t know about you, but I definitely want to purchase the entire 5-piece capsule. All I really need to decide on is which colors I want ASAP!!

What do you think about the VETTA Capsule? Will you be purchasing through their Kickstarter? What are some of your favorite ethical, eco-friendly fashion brands?
